Pomegranate plants require a balanced and regular fertilization

Basic Information

Pomegranate is a deciduous shrub, cultivated worldwide in arid and semi-arid regions, mainly for its refreshing and sweet acidic tasting juice that has medicinal properties.
Pomegranate plants are able to adapt to a variety of soils, but they prefer a deep and well-drained soil with a pH of 6,0- 6,5. They can grow in locations with tropical or warm and temperate climates, but the finest quality is achieved in areas with hot, dry summers, and cool winters. Pomegranates can withstand significant periods of drought and can cope well under saline conditions. The most common problems a farmer has to deal with in pomegranate cultivation are sunburn of the fruits and fruit cracking.

Detailed Description

Pomegranate plants require a balanced and regular fertilization. Nitrogen is needed in high quantities as it is a main component of leaf chlorophyll and important for vegetative growth to support fruit development. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient, as it is a component of many plant compounds related to the production of energy. It also acts as a catalyst for numerous biochemical reactions in plants. Pomegranate has a high demand for potassium, with fertilization rates comparable to nitrogen. It plays an important role in achieving a high yield, increased fruit size and quality. It is an essential element in many plant metabolic processes enhancing the plant’s resistance to many abiotic factors. Iron and zinc are very significant micronutrients supporting a high photosynthesis rate, good flowering and fruit setting.
At planting, we recommend Basacote
® Starter 6M/9M. Granular fertilzation is also recommended at sprouting / bud development wit NovaTec® Classic. For fertigation systems, NovaTec® Solub is useful, for foliar application Basfoliar® CombiStipp SL. As biostimulant we recommend Basfoliar® Aktiv SL, Basfoliar® Kelp SL as well as Basfoliar® Fruits SL.
