Lettuce

A nutritional program to encourge the highest quality and the highest yield possible

Basic Information

Lettuces have a wide range of shapes and textures, from the dense heads of the iceberg type to the notched, scalloped or frilly leaves of leaf varieties. They can also vary in color from light green to sharp red. The right supply of nutrients ensures high quality and healthy plants from the field to the shelf. Furthermore, intrinsic parameters, such as the nitrate content, have to be taken in account when choosing the right fertilizer.

Detailed Description

The amount of nutrients absorbed by lettuce will depend on the amount of biomass produced. The rate of nitrogen absorption is accentuated in the head formation phase. Phosphorus stimulates the root system and the formation of the head. The response of the plant to potassium fertilization is closely related to the richness of the available potassium in the soil. It is of great importance for the leaf structure and is the main nutrient involved in the frost tolerance when lettuce is produced in the autumn-winter cycle. Calcium is also of great importance as it is adsorbed in great quantity but with many difficulties. It is not uncommon to deal with the classic “tip burn” caused by insufficient content of calcium in the leaf border. Lettuce is also very sensitive to soil fungal diseases. The best way to reduce their severity, is to the colonization of the soil and plant surface with natural antagonists. COMPO EXPERT is a specialist for this crop, with high technology fertilizers like DuraTec®, NovaTec® or Blaukorn® for immediate nutrient availability and fast growth (all options like base application). For fertigation system water-soluble fertilizers like NovaTec® Solub (stabilized) or Hakaphos® fit perfect to different situations. In addition micronutrients, e.g. Fetrilon® Combi for foliar application and Basafer® for soil application and biostimulants like Vitanica® RZ complete the fertilization concept. Our target is to contribute to the highest yield possible with the lowest possible nitrogen fertilization in lettuce, to obtain the lowest nitrate level in the leaves at harvest.
